NTT DoCoMo has developed a prototype multi-band power amplifier that accommodates eight frequency bands between 700 MHz and 2.5 GHz, paving the way for lightweight, all-in-one mobile phones capable of standalone wireless communications of different standards, including the forthcoming extra-fast LTE standard as well as existing W-CDMA and GSM.

DOCOMO’s new amplifier, which offers gain and output power equivalent to those of conventional single-band amplifiers, paves the way for multi-standard mobile phones that are generally no larger than existing models. It enables 8-band operation by employing matching circuits whose frequency characteristics are controlled by multiple semiconductor switches according to the required frequency band.

DOCOMO will present its new amplifier at the 2010 IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, from 10:30 AM on January 11.

So you?re out and about and when you go to use your mobile phone you find your battery is dead, so what do you do? Well how about simply whipping out your battery, slipping it onto your finger and twirling it around a few times for some charge.

A neat idea with this concept reported on by design.fr, the concept has been designed by Song Teaho and Hyejin Lee whereby to charge your mobile phone for a few minutes all you need do it swing it round your fingertip a few times which apparently would give you enough charge to make a call or send a text.

According to the designers, if you spin the battery round roughly 130 times you should get enough charge to last about two minutes of talk time.

In the past we?ve seen wind up gizmos and the like but nothing quite like this mobile phone battery concept, and apparently it doesn?t necessarily have to be just mobile phone batteries as the same concept should work with other batteries as well.

More from CES: FLO TV and mophie are teaming up to bring live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The service will be available via a mophie intelligent case named the juice pack TV that fits around the iPhone or iPod Touch, turning it into the TV that lives in your jacket pocket. The pack has a built-in external battery that provides an extra four hours of battery life, and the pack’s battery charge is always drained first.

The coolest part is that this is actually live TV streaming into your device, not a download. Users must sign up for the service subscription, and though there is no word on channel options, mophie’s Web site claims that it will provide most larger networks, including CBS, CNBC, Comedy Central, FOX, MTV and NBC.

A FLO TV press release says we should see juice packs during the first half of 2010.

South Korean companies have certainly come a long way since they first started off on wobbly ground, and boy are they conquering the global market in many industries. Their automakers, Hyundai and Kia are even able to give the Japanese companies a run for their yen, and Samsung and LG are already global players where consumer electronics are concerned. We’ll be taking a closer look at the latter today, with LG Electronics having the honor of introducing the industry’s first portable, battery-operated mobile DTV Stateside, where it was specially designed to receive new rugged over-the-air signals being transmitted by local broadcasters. The future for mobile DTV looks bright as hundreds of stations are expected to sign on the air this year in order to cater for portable TV reception demand that is currently on the uptrend.

Officially known as the DP570MH Mobile Digital Television with DVD Playback, it will be formally introduced to the masses at CES 2010 later this week. According to Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA, “It’s easy to receive Mobile DTV broadcasts with LG’s new Mobile Digital Television set, which comes equipped with a built-in antenna and the ability to play DVD and CD discs. Even on a fast-moving train, a viewer should expect robust reception from favorite local channels – unlike some small digital TV sets currently on the market.”

Capable of receiving mobile DTV on demand virtually anywhere and at any speed, the DP570MH Mobile Digital Television ensures you don’t miss a TV moment regardless of where you are. Other features include stereo speakers and a 7? widescreen display at WQVGA resolution of 480 x 234, where the LG Mobile Digital TV was designed in such a manner that you are able to tilt its display screen to your preferred angle so as not to strain those eyes of yours during lengthy shows. Placing it in your bag is a snap – just fold down the clamshell-style screen and it will transform into a manageable 9.5? x 6.5? device. Other abilities include audio, photo and video playback, USB 2.0 connectivity and an integrated DVD player. Expect the DP570MH Portable Television to hit the market later this year for $249.

After Google secured a place in mobile advertising with a $750 million purchase of AdMob, there’s talk that Apple has purchased Quattro Wireless , an AdMob competitor, for $275 million. What’s Apple getting into now? This feels like a continuation of what we saw happening during the LaLa deal when suggestions went around that Apple stole the company from under Google’s nose as retaliation for Google’s purchase of AdMob. Geez. At the rate this is going, someone will be crying soon, but at least we know that Apple is definitely starting to take the Internet seriously now . As far as speculating over Apple’s motivation beyond simply slapping Google across the face, this would seem to be a move to gain control of the mobile advertising platform on the iPhone. Beyond that, perhaps there’s motivation for ad placement within apps, or maybe the entire thing is all about a new product

I have noticed that brands like Softbank, which sells eye-catching models for most female teenagers like a phone designed with popular sanrio characters are only available in Japan. Plus, their gadgets are always equipped with high technological features(i don’t know what you call it.)
Why aren’t they selling it outside Japan? If they did, they could be at the top of the world right now.

There are a few reasons:

The Japanese market is huge when it comes to mobile phones, customers sign up on long-term contracts for new phones which makes it profitable. The rate at which people jump contracts and pay penalties is also high so that there are always a lot of new phones which will be snapped up.

Japanese phone companies often try out new features in their domestic markets before trying them on other markets.
They wean out the successful features before trying them abroad.

Sim cards in Japan are specific to phone companies, so that the same phones cannot work abroad.

There are also rules in Japan for sending new technology overseas (e.g. to China), especially manufacturing, so sometimes new technology release is delayed.

Not so long ago Microsoft posted job ads which means the software producer is going to build its Xbox Live online gaming platform in Windows Mobile.

Microsoft needs a Principlal Program Manager who is able to drive the platform and integrate Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile. The task of such person is to concentrate on what makes gaming experiences ‘Live Enabled’ through such options as social interactions, multi-screen experiences and avatar integration.

Also the company is looking for software tester that will have to bring more entertainment to Windows Mobile.

It should be mentioned that integrating Xbox Live with Windows Mobile will have a certain sense. Nowadays there are gadgets that use the platform but, unfortunately, they are not able to rival with Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch in user interface. Recently the Apple devices have become popular mostly because the majority part of games is available on Apple’s App Store.

It is expected that Xbox Live will be available on the new Windows Mobile 7 platform, it may happen in the fourth quarter of 2010. Windows Mobile 7 should have the feature gap between competitors such as Google Android devices and the iPhone and its platform.
