CES 2010 might be just around the corner, but it sounds like Nokia’s next big move might be at Mobile World Congress in February. Well, not quite at MWC: Espoo actually pulled out of the tradeshow earlier this year, but now we’re hearing that there will be a private Connecting People event in Barcelona on the first and second days of MWC. That’s particularly interesting because one of the reasons Nokia pulled out of MWC was to increase focus on its own Nokia World conference, so we’re guessing nothing major will be coming out in Spain — but we can’t help but agree with this poignant Babelfish translation of Engadget Spanish’s post on the same subject: “Fulfilled mission, Nokia: you have been able to attract our curiosity.”

Ever since Ribbit Mobile launched, I’ve been using it to forward my calls to Skype when I am at my computer and transcribe all of my voicemails, the text of which are then sent to me via email. It’s similar to Google Voice (which Mike uses), except you can use your existing mobile number. So I was pretty excited to hear that Ribbit Mobile now has an iPhone app which was just approved today (iTunes link).

I was also pretty surprised. Because Apple wouldn’t approve the iPhone app for Google Voice, which led to an FCC investigation last summer. The main reason Apple gave was because Google Voice substituted its own dialer for the iPhone’s native dialer, and this changed one of the iPhone’s core user interfaces.

Well, suffice it to say that Ribbit Mobile does not attempt to take over any of the iPhone’s telephone functions. Calls are placed through the iPhone’s regular dialer. And you don’t even receive calls through the app. Just like with Ribbit Mobile, the calls are placed through the mobile phone you link up to your Ribbit account.

Instead, the app is more of a voicemail manager. You can see all of your transcribed voicemails, and click them to read each one, or press the play button to hear them. For each voicemail, you have the option to call back (through the iPhone dialer and AT&T), respond via SMS or email, or even record a voicemail response, which you send as an MP3 attached to an email. The app also lets you create a To-Call list to remind yourself which voicemails to respond to directly later on.

Ribbit Mobile’s iPhone app is fine as far as it goes, but I kind of just want it to take over the entire phone function of the iPhone, which is the part of my iPhone I use the least anyway. But if it did that, it probably would never have seen the light of day.

On the roof of the building “Haus der Presse” on a cold bright day in September, a Canon 5D Mk II with a 400mm lens mounted on a photo-robot started a 172 minute tour to record a panorama of the city of Dresden. The tour resulted in 1.665 full format pictures of 21.4 Megapixels. The subsequent conversion of a whopping 102 GB of raw data by a computer with a main memory of 48 GB and 16 processors took a staggering 94 hours. With a total resolution of 297.500 x 87.500 pixels – or 26 Gigapixels – the picture is the largest in the world to date…

Nokia introduced a new music-enabled mobile phone as addition to its XpressMusic range. The Nokia 5220 Music phone device offers instant access to music on-the-go with a unique, asymmetrical design. Featured for the first time on a Nokia XpressMusic device, a built-in lanyard makes the device easy to carry anywhere. Additional features of the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic include up to 24 hours playback time, dedicated XpressMusic keys and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in the 3th quarter of 2008 with a retail price of 160 EUR, before taxes and subsidies.

The new Nokia XpressMusic 5220 handset is compatible with the recently launched Nokia Music Store and offer easy music side-loading. With Nokia Music Store, consumers can choose from more than 2 million tracks from both major and independent labels; international and local artists and simply browse, download, stream and sync either to a PC or side-load directly to a mobile device.

But the new XpressMusic mid-ranger needs to make an epic run. It follows in the wake of Nokia 5310, which the house claims to be the best selling music phone in the world with more than 10 million units sold globally. So, no wonder we start this review with a bag full of mixed feelings.

Nokia 5220 is priced quite close to Nokia 5310 and, while obviously positioned below (model designation), it manages to outperform it in quite a few tasks. Well then, besides exploring the newcomer today, we will also be trying to resolve a rather challenging XpressMusic dilemma for all music-loving fans out there.

Nokia 5220 XpressMusic is breaking free of the traditional bar form factor and that’s a nice attempt to spice up the XpressMusic portfolio and turn up the youthful appeal of the lineup. It’s a lower midrange handset alright, but it’s a style statement in its own right. If it’s megapixel count and ample touchscreen that gets you excited, you are bound to look elsewhere. But the Nokia 5220 offers a truly music-rich experience at an attractive price tag. If that’s your game, hop on and let’s see how cool is saying no to symmetry.

The Nokia 5220 XpressMusic is a tri-band music phone for GSM 900/1800/1900 or GSM 850/1800/1900 in some regions. In addition to a 2 megapixel camera, the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic supports 8GB microSD cards for AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA music files, pictures, video, contacts and more. Additional features include USB 2.0 , Bluetooth 2.0, Flash Lite 2.1 and MIDP Java 2.1 with additional Java APIs.

  • Despite some last-minute drama with the government, Canada’s WIND Mobile has launched today, bringing to the table an interesting new low-cost competitor to the nation’s giant incumbents, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Though its network — based on last year’s AWS auction — lacks the footprint of the bigger guys, the pricing is pretty compelling: its $15 voice plan offers twice the minutes of low-cost competitors Koodo and Fido (which are really just fronts for Telus and Rogers, anyway) and CAD $35 (about $33) wins you unlimited data on your BlackBerry. Speaking of BlackBerrys, WIND is rolling out the Bold 9700 as one of its launch devices alongside the HTC Maple (known as the Dash 3G in the States), the Samsung Gravity, the Huawei U519, and the E181 USB modem. Service is only live in Toronto and Calgary at the moment, but the limited distribution doesn’t seem to be holding people back — WIND’s site has been up and down all morning.

Since the day mobile gadgets were invented, they were never envisioned to perform just basic functions. Manufacturers of mobile devices are more than aware of this phenomenon. So they have invested a lot of time and energy into developing and designing the coolest mobile gadgets that consumers would want.

The challenge has always been to find the right balance between power, features, and design. For example, to stay competitive, laptop manufacturers are forever looking at ways to produce slimmer machines. Mobile phone manufacturers are forever looking at ways to improve the designs of their products so that their products look “cool”.

For sure, their efforts may be part of a complex business strategy. After all, it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate products based on hardware specifications or software features. Such elements can be easily duplicated by the competition. So if another company launches a more powerful machine, a product line may be dead in the water. To avoid this problem, manufacturers have learned to create loyalty. How? By improvising on their designs.

Apple is very good at creating loyal customers for their products. Take a look at the Apple 2G iPhone. Everyone wants to get their hands on an iPhone, even though Apple has an exclusive contract with AT&T that allows users to connect only with the giant telecommunications company. But the product is so successful that Apple fans are looking at different methods that allow them to unlock their iPhones so that they can use the gadget with their existing carriers. Obviously, there are some legal concerns. But that is not the point here. The point here is that when there is a loyal following for a popular product, the business will be successful.

After the success of the 2G iPhones, along come the next generation of iPhones – the 3G iPhones. Since the formula has been working so well for Apple, there is little change to the look and feel of the 3G iPhone. The main difference lies in the high speed connection that the 3G iPhone offers. 2G iPhones only offer low speed Internet connections. But with high speed connections opened up, the 3G iPhone is able to support a plethora of new applications. For example, downloading maps for navigation is now possible on the 3G iPhone. If you attempt to run the same application on the 2G iPhone, it would take ages!

Because of the presence of more applications, this has an adverse impact on the battery life of the iPhone 3G. Obviously, the more powerful the applications, the more power it consumes. Hence, the shorter battery life. Still, that does not deter thousands and thousands of Apple fans from getting their hands on a 3G iPhone.

Mobile gadgets have never been about power alone. They are lifestyle gadgets, and they will be part of the social experience of their owners. Perhaps you too would like to show off your new 3G iPhone to your peers.
