Research has shown that mobile phones can increase the rate at which worms reproduce, so if you are finding more worm casts than usual in your lawn, then the reason just might be your Sony Xperia Play – that is if you are one of the early users of this remarkable gaming smartphone.

Naturally if you are playing games on the Play, you are probably more interested in playing that great “Worms” game by EA Mobile than using your phone to encourage the reproduction of common worms in your garden, but according to scientists the worms just love the microwave signals from your phone and it makes them really hot.

Quite why worms get turned on by mobiles remains a mystery, but scientific tests have demonstrated incontrovertibly that worm fertility is increased by being close to them. There is no suggestion that the phones cause any changes to the worms’ DNA, as the strength of the signal is nowhere near strong enough to cause any cellular damage, and neither is the signal strength sufficient to physically warm up the worms. In fact if the worms did experience warming, then it would be expected that their fertility would drop as many of the larvae would be rendered infertile, resulting in an overall decline in the worms’ population.

In addition to increased fertility, it seems that mobile phones also bring about an overall increase in the average length of the worms exposed to them. They can grow up to 10% longer than unexposed worms.

Nematode worms are particularly affected and another interesting finding is that in forested areas with pine trees and one or two mobile phone base stations, the trees are often affected by a disease which is carried by nematodes and is known as nematode disease. It is possible that emissions from the base stations are causing the nematode population to increase with concomitant damage to the trees.

The answer to all this is “don’t worry”. With over sixty Playstation games to choose from to play on your Xperia, you have more than enough to do with your time other than loose sleep over nematodes and pine trees.

Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Xperia X2. The latest iteration features the familiar panels interface but also debuts SlideView, “which provides quick access to frequently used phone activities.”

Like with the original X1 (read our review), there actually are two versions of the X2, with the X2a the version with U.S.-compatible 3G bands. That said, there’s no U.S. availability mentioned anywhere, and the X2a appears slated for Australia and New Zealand.

Specs are a little incomplete, but we’ll start you off with a massive 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, image stabilization, geotagging, a 16x digital zoom, flash and more. Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional is on board the 3.2-inch 480×800 touchscreen (resistive, still, unfortunately). There’s quad-band EDGE and tri-band (850/900/1900) on the 3G side.

Sony Ericsson says the X2 will be available in the fourth quarter. No word yet on pricing, but you can bet it’ll cost a pretty penny. Next question is whether the X2 will get any support from U.S. carriers, after the X1 was spurned. Get the full rundown here, and we’ve got more pictures after the break.

Sony is considering a gaming/phone hybrid device as a direct competitor to the iPhone, according to Nikkei Business Daily (Via Reuters). Unless you’re new to the Sony Phone rumor mill, a gaming/phone hybrid has long since been rumored to be in development, but has been denied by the Japanese hardware manufacturer.

Sony currently develops mobile devices with Swedish partner Ericsson. In early 2009, MobileToday sources claimed Sony Ericsson had pitched the idea of a PlayStation-branded phone to Sony Corp, but was denied the rights to use the trademark.

The rumor went on to further claim Sony only plans to license a PlayStation phone if the company plans to make handsets independently from Ericsson. In May 2009, Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama stated that his company was destined to “lose” if they did not adapt to the “new technology and new market environment” — presumably referring to Apple’s iPhone.

According to the new rumor, Sony plans to set up a project team to develop the new device, which will combine functions of the PSP and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones. A PSP phone? Just imagine how much that mythical beast would cost.

Currently a tipster has sent engadget an image of the unannounced Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 (codename Vulcan) mobile phone, replacing the XPERIA X1. As you can see, the X2 will have a large display, a front camera and QWERTY keyboard. It’s likely the phone will run Windows Mobile 6.5.
A tipster tells that the device you’re looking at here is Sony Ericsson’s codename “Vulcan” — better known as the X2 — which would presumably replace the X1 at some point in the next few days, weeks, months, or years.

Though the picture’s small, you can clearly make out the X Panel button in the lower left of the phone’s front and a Windows key in the upper left of the keyboard, which adds a dose of credibility — the company has, after all, put quite a bit of time and effort into pimping its panel interface SDK, and right now, the X1 is the only device that supports it.

The image looks a little rough around the edges, but we can easily chalk that up to this being either a composite mockup or a very early prototype combined with the fact that our tipster seems to have blanked out the surroundings to protect the source. We’re not saying it’s definitely real, but this certainly looks plausible — we’re just not convinced yet that it looks better than the model it’d replace. Thoughts?

Americans will soon get another 8 megapixel phone to choose from. Destined to reach via T-Mobile, the Sony Ericsson CS8 or C905 (as we know it) has got an approval from the FCC, which means T-Mobile will go ahead and pit it against its own Memoir in the coming months. We already know about the phone but if you want to dig some of an American variant, here’s an user manual and bunch of photos to keep you busy.

Sony Ericsson’s newest (T-Mobile-bound) slider phone, the Cyber-shot CS8 (known elsewhere as the C905), has received approval by the FCC. Not only are there a bunch of external and internal photos of the new CS8, but for the extra curious/impatient readers out there, you can also read the CS8’s user manual (pdf).

From what we can gather, the CS8 includes an 8 megapixel camera w/ flash, WiFi, GPS (w/ Google Maps), Bluetooth, and a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot, among other features. Obviously, since this is just FCC approval, there’s no pricing or availability info yet.

Though don’t have yet the full story behind Idou, Sony Ericsson’s 12-megapixel touchscreen media mobile is definitely a phone to watch in 2009.

But your will amazed coz all the stores are closed and, if your hotel is like mine, the “concierge” dude sitting at the front desk watching spanish Futurama doesn’t give a crap. Oh, and I also learned all about the Sony Ericsson “Idou”. Sort of.

While Sony Ericsson technically announced the Idou, they’re not saying all that much about it. We know that it’s rocking a 12.1 megapixel camera, a 3.5? 16:9 touchscreen, and – get this – a yet-to-be-finished version of Symbian. To top it all off, “Idou” isn’t actually the final name. It’s an odd announcement – but seeing as the camera is probably going to be the selling point here regardless, I suppose they’ve said all they need to.

Also it is the part of my duty to suggest people those mobile phones that are not only cost-effective but also at the same time fulfill their every expectation.

Sony Ericsson K660i silver black is one widget that according to me has all the makings of being a complete mobile phone. Yes, it is true, blessed with futuristic looks and sophisticated functions, this mobile device has the ability to deliver the power-packed performance at any time. With vital stats of 104 x 47 x 15 mm and weight of only 95 grams clearly prove that it is a pocket-friendly mobile handset.
Sony Ericsson K660i silver black also comes with a 2.0-inch TFT display screen & 2.0 mega pixels built-in camera. Needless to say that, this widget will make your jaws drop. Since, the mobile phone is from Sony Ericsson, therefore it becomes very necessary for me to discuss about its music section. Equipped with MP3/AAC/MPEG4 player and FM radio with RDS, this mobile gadget will allow the users to get the best quality of entertainment in both video and audio formats. The awesome feature of TrackID music recognition available in the mobile phone allows you to get all the information about the playing track. You also get the memory space of 32 mega bytes that allows you to store unlimited number of music and video files. E-mails, Instant Messaging, 3G HSDPA network enabled, secondary CIF videocall camera, location services along with 330 hours of standby time of battery are few other salient features of this extraordinary special mobile gadget from Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson continues to blur the lines between MP3 music player and mobile phone with their new flagship Walkman branded handset, the W980i.

Encased in their best clamshell design yet, this phone has a fantastic quality music player, a 3 megapixel camera and a few very unusual features!

Sony Ericsson Walkman phones have always sounded great, but the W980i takes them to a new level. The player supports the majority of file formats out there, it has Mega-Bass enhancement plus various sound tweaks and equaliser presets to make the most of what you’re listening too.

Specs:

• The latest v3.0 Walkman software is packed with features and sounds fantastic.
• It’s a 3G phone with HSDPA support plus GPRS and EDGE.
• Enjoy wireless stereo music with A2DP Bluetooth.
• A built-in FM transmitter allows you to listen to any music stored on the W980i on any other radio device, making it perfect for the car!
• A 3 megapixel camera can be found on the rear and a small, video call lens is inside the clamshell.

The accelerometer is used for Shake Control where a flick of the wrist is all that’s needed to advance or shuffle tracks, and Sony Ericsson’s mood-based playlist generator named SensMe is fun too.
