Acer’s new Gemstone Blue line—more specifically, the Aspire 8920G—breaks the mold in more ways than one. Its 16:9, 18.4-inch screen offers true 1080p widescreen resolution; it’s the first notebook to break the True 5.1 Dolby sound barrier; and Acer puts a whole new spin on multimedia controls, with its dedicated futuristic control panel. We tested the top-of-the-line configuration (AS8920-6671) and came away impressed. It delivers a sleek look, loads of multimedia features, and outstanding performance. This 9-pounder is hardly portable, but as a desktop replacement it shines.

Another company has got in on the action with an inexpensive Linux sub notebook designed to rival the Asus Eee PC.Unlike the rest of the competitors, this one may actually have a chance of becoming popular becuase of the price.
A single Bestlink Alpha 400 will cost you either $219 for the 1GB model or $250 for the 2GB model, which is very affordable, and if you want to buy in bulk, say for a school or an office they will only cost you $180 each.

More and more people are asking my opinion on which is the best ultra mobile laptop at the moment. The two that first spring to mind are the HP 2133 Mini-Note and the ASUS Eee PC.
HP’s 2133 is now available in most countries whereas ASUS is coming out with an Intel Atom chip based model in a couple of weeks (ASUS Eee PC 901).
Which one is better?
Let’s compare the specs of the two little titans:
(take note that not all specs for the 901 have been made official yet – some were based the ASUS Eee PC 900)

Just when it looked like OLPC was finally getting at least one foot firmly grounded in reality with the upcoming Windows XP version of its low-priced XO, Nick Neg takes things back into the stratosphere with the unveiling of the XO 2.0. Due in 2010, the new laptop will employ dual sunlight-readable touchscreen displays in a smaller, folding e-book form factor. Sure, it looks totally amazing, but we’ll believe it when we see it. As if that weren’t ambitious enough, Nick calls a $20 pricepoint per display not out of the question, thanks to the ubiquity of LCD screens for DVD players, with a final laptop price of $75.
Sure Nick, but 2010? Let’s work on getting the XO down to $100 first, shall we? Oh, and speaking of the XO, the Give 1 Get 1 program will be started back up in August or September of this year. There’s just never a dull moment with these folks.
