The Razer Switchblade Concept is a breakthrough portable gaming device design that allows gamers to play on the go without giving up the precision and control ordinarily possible on a desktop gaming system. The Razer Switchblade was conceptualized and designed by the Razer design team and incorporates an ultra-sensitive multi-touch screen with a innovative tactile dynamic keyboard that adapts and changes on the fly with the games being played.

It also has an extremely unique feature with an chameleon-like keyboard. The keys of this specially designed gaming laptop are designed to change depending on what game is played. So if you are doing a Warcraft-type game, you’ll see the direction keys and action hotkeys. You will see a different formation for a flying type of game. It reminds me of the Optimus Maximus keyboard. Here comes the sad part. I don’t know when this Razer Switchblade is planning on being released, or if it is being released. In fact, I don’t even know if this is the item that Razer wanted me to see.

Some of us here at Google spend almost all of our time thinking about one thing: How do we create a three-dimensional model of every built structure on Earth? How do we make sure it’s accurate, that it stays current and that it’s useful to everyone who might want to use it?

One of the best ways to get a big project done — and done well — is to open it up to the world. As such, today we’re announcing the launch of Google Building Maker, a fun and simple (and crazy addictive, it turns out) tool for creating buildings for Google Earth.

We like to think of Building Maker as a cross between Google Maps and a gigantic bin of building blocks. Basically, you pick a building and construct a model of it using aerial photos and simple 3D shapes – both of which we provide. When you’re done, we take a look at your model. If it looks right, and if a better model doesn’t already exist, we add it to the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth. You can make a whole building in a few minutes.

Our early beta testers insist that Building Maker is more like a game than a tool. For now, you can choose to make buildings in any of about 50 cities. We’ll keep adding more cities, but don’t feel left out if we don’t have your hometown yet — modeling in a place you’ve never been is a fantastic way to discover more about it. Teachers might find that Building Maker is a great way to get students interested in geography. Armchair tourists can not only visit an unfamiliar city; they can engage with it. It’s amazing what you learn when you look at something really closely.

Listen, it’s not like this official confirmation means too much as you could already buy an HTC Pure starting yesterday, but it’s always nice to have a shiny press release and embargo lift. The HTC Pure and Tilt 2 are AT&T’s very first Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets and feature HTC’s incredible TouchFLO3D UI layered beautifully on top of Windows Mobile.

We checked out the Pure in person a little while back and it’s a little different than the stock HTC unit — a tad on the thick side, but with a dark blue case and a pretty angular look, it’s definitely a great touch-based WinMo device. It will run you $149.99 with a two-year contract and the Tilt2 will be available in the “coming weeks” for $299.00 also with a two-year agreement.

Think what you will, but we’re big believers in “keeping it real” ’round these parts. While we swoon whenever a new smart phone hits the scene, the vast majority are still stuck in the flip phone zone – and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that. Have no fear, flip fans, Verizon is here to fulfill all your flipping needs with the new Nokia 2705 Shade.

Being marketed as a “light-weight, compact and colorful” flip phone, the Nokia Shade will initially only be available online and will come in two tasty flavors: “normal” – one with a camera (more below)*, and “secret agent” – a model without a camera, for all of you who can’t carry camera-equipped devices into your info-sensitive work places (we presume).

In regards to the “colorful” aspect of the device (don’t mind the black press shot of the phone above), Nokia is keeping with the old-school theme (think early 2000s) and will be offering interchangeable “Xpress-on” covers in blue, red, and purple for $19.99. Considering the Nokia Shade with camera, itself, will cost just $29.99 (with a new two-year customer agreement), spending almost $20 a pop per color cover (66% of the total price of the handset, for crying out loud) is pretty comical. The new flipper will be available online beginning Oct. 6 at verizonwireless.com.

Here are the rest of the juicy details:

Key features:
• Large display on one of the smallest devices available at Verizon Wireless
• VZ NavigatorSM-capable to give customers access to more than 15 million points of interest
• Connect in color with Xpress-on changeable covers (sold separately)

Lifestyle features:
• Stylish and sleek with interchangeable covers for added personalization
• Stores up to 1,000 contacts
• Light-weight and easily fits into a pocket or purse
• Text, picture and voice messaging capabilities
• Up to 300 minutes of usage time or up to 360 hours of standby time
• 1.3 megapixel camera
• Bluetooth® compatible with support for the following Bluetooth profiles: headset, hands-free, phonebook access, basic printing, and object push (for vCard and vCalendar)
• Micro USB 2.0 compatible
• Access to Mobile Web

Domestic Violence Awareness Month*

Because purple is the awareness color for domestic violence, those who purchase the Nokia Shade with a camera online during Domestic Violence Awareness Month will receive a free picture frame phone lanyard and a purple Nokia Xpress-on Cover while supplies last. Additionally, the Nokia Shade features pre-loaded wallpapers that highlight HopeLine®, Verizon Wireless’ phone recycling and reuse program, and it is the first Verizon Wireless phone to have #HOPE pre-programmed into the contact list. When customers dial #HOPE, they are connected to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, where they can receive information or help with domestic violence situations or questions. To learn more about Verizon Wireless’ efforts around Domestic Violence Awareness Month, visit www.verizonwireless.com/HopeLineDVAM.

Seth at Computerworld has noticed Apple’s purchase of Placebase, the former mapping service company that GigaOm was praising last year. Of course, this begs the question: Will Apple be rolling their own maps?

Apple uses the technology they buy (Coverflow, for example). We were unfamiliar with the service, but GigaOm describes some sweet features like PushPin, which provided developers with an API that could layer commercial information, crime data, etc. on a map. For a nice example of PushPin at work, check out PolicyMap.

Now for the baseless assumptions. Google maps appear in a number of Apple products, like the iPhone, iPhoto and iWeb. Perhaps Apple plans to stuff their own solutions into those slots. Or perhaps they’re after a certain technology from Placebase and not the whole enchilada.

Note that the purchase went down back in July. Seth has also discovered that PlaceBase’s founder and former CEO, Jaron Waldman, is now a part of Apple’s “Geo Team,” which sounds like the Justice League but with Al Gore in charge.

Recently, Apple’s App Store has only been around for a relatively short time, but it’s grown phenomenally during the period of time that it has been available. Unfortunately for the company, it may have grown a bit too fast, and as such, Apple seems a bit under prepared. Many developers face long wait times for application approvals, some get their software rejection unfairly, and a vast majority get frustrated when they face long periods of silence whilst their applications are inspected. Whilst the first couple of issues are being worked on, the third has been somewhat addressed today, according to MacRumors, with the introduction of the App Store Resource Center.

An email went out to developers today, stating, “[Apple is] pleased to introduce the App Store Resource Center, a single destination designed to make it easier for you to find details on everything you need to know about distributing your app on the App Store — from how to prepare for app submission to managing your app once it’s been posted. Make sure you also check out the News and Announcementssection of the iPhone Dev Center for tips on submitting your apps to the App Store, turnaround time for app review, new program features, and guidance on everything from development and testing to distribution and marketing.” This is a great step for beginner developers looking to make their mark on the software world, as now they can further their knowledge on Apple’s App Store, and it’s handy for those already selling products through the store for obvious reasons.

Most importantly, this improvement shows that the company is listening to the complaints; it’s provided a few developers around Twitter with renewed hope for the service, as some have even given up development for it in general due to the issues. If you’re a developer, and you haven’t already checked out the new site, please head over and have a look, and let us know what you think.

Try as it might, Microsoft’s mobile media player Zune still can’t touch Apple’s iPod Touch. And it may not get the opportunity to. Ever.

Microsoft rolled out its latest iteration of its flagship music and media device recently with some decent hardware and software upgrades — including the ability to stream music over the Web to a PC. The Zune can also link to a television. Apple’s Touch can do neither.

The Zune should capture more share will the refresh cycle, analysts say, however, it still faces an uphill battle against Apple’s iconic iPod, which accounts for a commanding 70% of the overall pure mobile-media player market in North America by some estimates.

RBC’s Mike Abramsky says the impact of the Zune is “neutral” to sales of the iPod and therefore he reiterated his Outperform rating on Apple’s stock vis-a-vis MSFT.

Moreover, he said in a Sept. 15 note to clients that the new Zune is launching into a declining standalone MP3 market with users shifting MP3 use to Smart phones.

“iPhone has a huge, perhaps unassailable, lead in Smartphones and an easy upgrade path from iPod [iTunes, account info, content, apps all transition easily] whereas Zune — at this juncture — remains a standalone strategy into a shrinking market.”

HP DreamScreen: the Facebook photo frame

Sure, the HP DreamScreen does all your regular digital photo frame chores, like telling the time, playing music and movies, and occasionally showing your snaps. But it also outclasses all comers with one clever feature: web access for internet radio, and Facebook. Want to poke the peeps in your photos? Now you can, straight from the frame.
Coming in two models, the 10.2-inch 100 and 13.3-inch 130, the HP DreamScreen range cram in 2GB of storage and the skills to stream photos over Wi-Fi, but that net connection gets put to further use with internet radio, Pandora music streaming and a specially crafted Facebook app that lets you graze on photos, status updates and event news.
