Currently, The U.S. Department of Justice may not be happy with this and other exclusivity arrangements, though, and has opened a review of AT&T, Verizon, and some of the other major telecoms. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, this “initial review of Gadget Reviews” will explore issues like anti-competitive practices, the sheer market share of AT&T and Verizon (60% of wireless customers), and the practice of locking up phones via exclusivity agreements. Could the government end the AT&T-Apple partnership?

Soon meaning the July 9th London press event, presumably, where this 9.9-mm slate running WinMo on a 4.1-inch 800×480 pixel display should get a shove out the retail door. Microsoft might not be launching a Zune phone just yet but its Zune HD player will pack a powerful Nvidia Tegra Chip. That means Zune HD is capable of running Windows Mobile 7 if Microsoft will want to cross that bridge when the time comes.

The Tegra APX chip that’s going to be used in the Zune HD is actually capable of powering future Windows Mobile, Windows CE or Android-based smartphones.

iPhone developer Manomio has been secretly working on a major App Store project for the past year that has just been completed, but may never see the light of day in its current form. Readers may remember Manomio as the developer behind the iPhone version of classic game Flashback. Manomio’s slogan is “In Retro We Trust” and their mission statement is to bring classic game titles to the leading handheld devices such as the iPhone.

What Manomio has done is to create a fully licensed Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone that can play classic games and even run Commodore 64 BASIC. The full list of features are as follows:

T-Mobile USA is expected to announce details around a new phone powered by Google’s Android operating system next week, say people familiar with the matter. The new Android-based phone is slated to be called myTouch 3G, those people say. Like its predecessor, known as the G1, the follow-on device uses Android and is made by HTC. It is expected to go on sale in the U.S. this summer, making it the second Android-based phone to hit the market from a major carrier in the U.S. Google executives have said that more such phones are on the way, forecasting that at least 18 Android phones from a variety of manufacturers will hit the market this year. T-Mobile has talked about plans to offer a second Android device for a while and a spokesman for the wireless carrier said Tuesday that it would have more details to share soon. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment, except to say the company was “pleased to see more Android-powered devices coming to market.”

It’s no secret that I didn’t mind AT&T’s pricing of their 3G S upgrades. However, 3G owners were upset that they were not offered the same discounts as new customers or those who had not fulfilled their two-year contracts.

Geeks Gadget: Disney/Asus Netpal Netbook

Disney has partnered with Asus to introduce the Netpal netbook PC targeted at kids aged 6-12. Based on Asus’s 8.9-inch Eee PC, the Disney Netpal gets Atom processor and a 160GB hard drive. It supports WiFi.
The Netpal will come pre-installed with several Disney themes, including Mickey Mouse, Cars, Toy Story, WALL-E..etc.
